A new study out of the University of Colorado Boulder has published a paper indicating that when people consume a natural dietary supplement called nicotinamide riboside (NR) daily, give us the same effect as Caloric Restriction, jump-starting the essential chemical pathways responsible for CR health benefits. Studies have shown that by reducing your caloric intake by up to 1/3 of your usual diet has demonstrated health benefits for some, but doing so may put many at high risk. As such CR isn’t recommended for everyone.
But by supplementing with NR instead of actually restricting your diet has shown improved blood pressure and arterial health, particularly in those with mild hypertension. The study has shown that a daily dose of 1,000 mg NR also boosted levels of another compound called nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) by 60 percent.

Studies have suggested that the body conserves NAD+ when subjected to calorie restriction as an evolutionary survival mechanism. But only till recently have scientists begun to explore the idea of supplementing with NAD+ precursors like NR to promote healthy aging.
The study also found that in 13 of its participants with elevated blood pressure or stage 1 hypertension (120-139/80-89 mmHg), systolic blood pressure was about 10 points lower after supplementation with NR. Translating to a 25 percent reduction in heart attack risk.
The researchers have said that they now need to conduct a broader clinical trial looking expressly at the impact of NR supplementation on blood pressure and arterial health. As to ascertain the safety and effectiveness of supplementing with such CR-mimicking compounds.
